Qualifications UTILITY MAINTENANCE WORKER

Under the direct supervision of the Groundskeeper and general supervision of the site and district administration, the Utility Maintenance Worker performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, painting, groundskeeping, custodial support, and repair duties in support of district facilities and operations. The position assists in maintaining district buildings, grounds, equipment, and facilities in a clean, safe, attractive, and functional condition.

This position places a heavy emphasis on painting preparation and painting, facility upkeep, preventive maintenance, grounds support, and independent project completion. The employee is expected to work independently, demonstrate initiative and reliability, and maintain high standards of workmanship and productivity.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform interior and exterior painting of district buildings and facilities.
Prepare surfaces for painting, including scraping, sanding, patching, pressure washing, masking, caulking, priming, and cleanup.
Operate and maintain painting tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, and related materials safely and effectively.
Perform general maintenance and repair work, including minor carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and facility repairs.
Assist with preventative maintenance and upkeep of district facilities and equipment.
Perform groundskeeping duties including mowing, edging, trimming, weed control, raking, irrigation support, and outdoor cleanup.
Operate grounds and maintenance equipment, including lawnmowers, weed eaters, blowers, hand tools, power tools, and district maintenance equipment.
Assist with the setup and breakdown of district events, activities, and facilities as assigned.
Respond to maintenance requests and work orders promptly and professionally.
Assist in maintaining safe, clean, and attractive school campuses and district properties.
Perform custodial support duties as needed during inclement weather, emergencies, staffing shortages, or special events.
Monitor and report safety hazards, equipment concerns, vandalism, or facility issues.
Maintain tools, supplies, equipment, and work areas in an organized and safe condition.
Work independently on assigned projects with minimal supervision.
Assist other maintenance, grounds, and custodial staff as needed.
Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Proper methods, materials, tools, and equipment are used in painting and surface preparation
General maintenance and repair techniques
Safe operation of grounds and maintenance equipment
Basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical repair practices
Workplace safety procedures and proper use of protective equipment
Groundskeeping and landscaping methods
Cleaning methods, materials, and equipment

Ability to:
Perform skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and repair work independently
Demonstrate strong painting and preparation skills with attention to detail
Safely operate tools, equipment, ladders, and machinery
Prioritize work and complete projects efficiently with minimal supervision
Follow written and verbal instructions
Work productively and professionally in a team environment
Adapt to changing assignments, schedules, weather conditions, and district needs
Maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and positive working relationships
Demonstrate initiative, dependability, and a strong work ethic
Work steadily and effectively in a physically demanding environment

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination equivalent to:
Graduation from high school or equivalent
Experience in painting, maintenance, construction, groundskeeping, custodial work, or related trades preferred
Highly desirable:
Professional painting experience
Experience in school, commercial, or facility maintenance
Experience or training in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or related trades

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Valid California Driver’s License
Ability to travel between district sites as assigned
Participate in and successfully complete all required district and job-related trainings
Maintain compliance with all applicable OSHA, Cal/OSHA, environmental safety, and district safety training requirements
Required Annual Safety Training:
2-hour Asbestos Awareness Training
2-hour Lead Awareness Training
Highly Desirable / District-Supported Training:
Asbestos Maintenance Worker Initial Training (16-hour certification)
Allows staff to safely disturb small amounts of asbestos-containing materials while performing maintenance repairs in compliance with applicable regulations
California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Lead-Related Construction Worker Initial Training
Three-day certification course focused on lead-safe work practices, containment, preparation, repair, and painting procedures
The District may support participation in approved maintenance, safety, painting, asbestos, lead, and facilities-related training programs as appropriate to district needs and employee responsibilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Environment:
Work is performed indoors and outdoors in a variety of environments, including classrooms, offices, workshops, rooftops, storage areas, construction areas, maintenance facilities, and school grounds. Duties may be performed in heat, cold, rain, wind, dust, noise, and other varying environmental conditions.
Physical Demands:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, and standing for extended periods. The position requires significant physical stamina and the ability to safely move equipment, tools, ladders, paint supplies, and materials.
Generally, the job requires approximately:
20% sitting
40% walking
40% standing and physical labor

Other Requirements:
The employee must be self-motivated, dependable, trustworthy, and able to work independently with limited supervision. The position requires strong time-management skills, initiative, flexibility, and the ability to consistently maintain productivity and quality of workmanship throughout the workday.
The successful candidate will demonstrate pride in their work, attention to detail, professionalism, and a willingness to support the overall appearance, safety, and functionality of district facilities.

WORK YEAR / HOURS
Classified Position
35–40 hours per week
Work year and salary placement are determined by the Grounds/Custodial/Maintenance classified salary schedule

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Under the direct supervision of the Groundskeeper and general supervision of the site and district administration.

The successful candidate will be required to pass a fingerprint clearance with the Department of Justice and show proof of eligibility to work in the United States
