Qualifications | DIRECTING AUTHORITY The employee is responsible to the Superintendent, who shall evaluate the employee. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Plan, procure, and prepare two nutritious and well-balanced meals per day per participating student that meet the USDA and Child Nutrition Services standards - Plan, procure, and prepare food related to Expanded Learning programming, special school events, and field trips - Engage in and coordinate with campus gardening program - Engage in and support classroom cooking endeavors - Maintain a clean and organized kitchen with regard to food safety and sanitation and Humboldt County Health Department standards - Maintain all required paperwork including monthly menus, purchase receipts, and daily meal records - Prepare for an audit when required every third year. Prepare for yearly audit by maintaining required yearly paperwork - Assist Superintendent with monthly state reimbursement paperwork for lunch/breakfast program - Oversee day to day monitoring of lunch/breakfast program including verification paperwork, record keeping, payments, deposit preparation, regulations, and meal monitoring - Purchase the best quality food at the best price - Ensure all costs associated with meals are covered by the amount received per student - Handle all financial transactions associated with the food program - Recruit and coordinate volunteer assistance as needed - Prepare nutritious, well balanced, delicious meals that the students (and faculty) enjoy and that takes into account variety and student choice - Collect feedback from parents and students on food program and in consultation with the Superintendent, follow-through with input by making adjustments and changes to the menu or procedures - Attend in-service training as required - Other duties as assigned or needed QUALIFICATIONS - Background in food preparation, menu development and cost analysis, budgeting, and understanding children’s food preferences - Self motivated and self managed; well organized - Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships and rapport with students, parents and staff - Must exercise self-initiative in doing necessary tasks - Must possess a Food Safety Certification - Fingerprint clearance through the California Department of Justice records - TB testing upon employment KNOWLEDGE OF: - Methods and equipment used in quantity food production - Applicable health and sanitation requirements - Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy - Procurement sources for wholesome and nutritious foods ABILITY TO: - Organize time - Adapt to changes in schedule given special events and requests by staff - Follow oral and written directions - Use computer to create menus, submit paperwork, and use email - Work effectively during rush conditions - Establish and maintain effective relationships with supervisors, staff, students, and parents - Wash, cut, slice, grate, mix, and assemble food items and ingredients - Operate standard kitchen equipment safely and efficiently EDUCATION & EXPERIENCES High school graduation and two years of college or commensurate work or educational experience preferred SALARY & WORK YEAR The Summer Camp Food Service Director will work one week at the end of June and four weeks between the middle of July to the Middle of August not to exceed 200 hours of work. WORK DAY Food shopping shall be done during regular work hours. Expect to work two dinner shifts a week through the overnight camps. Dinner dishes are done by camp staff and not the food services directors. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Some degree of physical ability is required of this position. Over time, the physical demands of any position are subject to change. Depending on the particular assignment, the Food Service Director could be expected to: - Stand, sit, and/or move about for sustained periods - Bend at the waist and reach overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally - Lift and carry weights up to 25 pounds - Frequent lifting of objects with a strength factor of light work - Exercise frequent bending, reaching and stretching overhead, above shoulders, and horizontally - Effectively and articulately communicate by verbal, auditory, and written means - Rely on clarity of vision at varying distances The Big Lagoon Union School District is committed to the principles of equal employment opportunities.
